The Chevy Camaro performed well in the 2021 J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, beating out key rivals in the Midsize Sporty Car category to rank at the very top of its segment.
The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study measures the number of problems per 100 vehicles experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year-old vehicles, assigning them a related ‘PP100’ score. It then uses this data to rank automakers and vehicle models based on their dependability, with a lower score reflecting superior reliability. The study covers 177 specific problems grouped into eight major vehicle categories ranging from in-car entertainment to engine/transmission, driving experience and seating, among others.
The Chevy Camaro topped the Midsize Sporty Car category, beating out the Dodge Challenger in the runner-up position. This study was based on the feedback from original owners of three-year-old vehicles, which means this study measured the relative dependability of the 2018 model-year Chevy Camaro. The current sixth-generation Chevy Camaro initially went on sale for the 2016 model year.
Last year’s J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study had the Ford Mustang as the top-ranked Midsize Sporty Car. This could be an indication that the Camaro is steadily getting more dependable as the sixth-generation Alpha platform model ages.
Meanwhile, the Chevrolet brand ranked above average in this study, but still lagged behind other mass-market rivals like Toyota, Kia and Hyundai.
This study found that the majority of problems with regard to new vehicles relate to their electronics, such as semi-autonomous safety systems, in-car entertainment and vehicle control electronics. While mechanical issues with new vehicles remain relatively rare, electronics problems can erode consumer trust in a make or model just as quickly, J.D. Power’s experts say.
“Today’s three-year-old vehicles are of higher quality and more dependable than in previous years,” said vice president of automotive at J.D. Power, Dave Sargent. “Most owners aren’t experiencing their vehicles breaking down or falling apart but, for many, vehicle technology continues to function poorly or inconsistently. If an owner can’t rely on a system to work as they expect, it is also considered a lack of dependability. It affects their overall view of the vehicle and their likelihood of staying loyal to their automaker.”
