BOTH of the sporty Audi SUVs in the compact segment now have an even fresher look, after the German car maker revised the SQ2 and SQ5, adding new headlights and bumpers, Audi connect services and driver assist systems.
The SQ2 offers a strong performance with the 2.0-litre TFSI coughing up 221kW and 400Nm, accelerating the SQ2 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Thanks to quattro all-wheel drive and the S sport suspension, the power is applied smoothly to the road.
The turbocharged four-cylinder has an excellent throttle response, and its sound becomes fuller as the speed increases. This is due in part to the flaps in the exhaust system. The seven-speed Stronic and quattro drive is standard in the Q2 top model.
Its lower gears feature short, sporty ratios while the seventh gear is long to reduce fuel consumption. Drivers can operate the lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission in modes D or S, or shift themselves.
If the Audi drive select system is in efficiency mode, the clutch disengages when coasting, allowing the compact sport SUV to freewheel. LED headlights are standard, and Audi can install Matrix LED headlights as an alternative.
The luggage compartment is located behind the tailgate and has a volume of 355 to 1,000 litres depending on the position of the rear backrests. As is the case with all Audi S models, the interior of the SQ2 is dominated by dark tones and high-quality surfaces.
The headlining is designed in black and the door panels feature a new material that is pleasant to touch. All equipment in the sportiest Q2 model is bundled in packages as there are four packages for the upholstery and colours.
Customers can choose from a combination of fabric and leather (standard), pure fine Nappa leather, with a rhombus pattern as an option, and a mixture of leather and the microfibre material Dinamica, which is replacing Alcantara.
It looks and feels like suede but consists mainly of recycled polyester, which is sourced from textiles and PET bottles, for example. Accent stripes and contrasting stitching adorn the seats. They are available in rock grey, black, and magma red.
The optional backlit trim strip constitutes a major exception in the segment. The Audi SQ2 comes as standard with automatic air conditioning, a sport multifunction steering wheel, and the sport seats.
The optional convenience features are bundled in the climate control, comfort, function, interior, infotainment, dynamism, and assist systems packages.
In terms of operation and infotainment, the range extends to the Audi virtual cockpit, which can be switched over to a sports view, and the MMI navigation plus (available with the navigation package). It is operated via a rotary pushbutton on the centre console.
The top-of-the-line infotainment system brings the Audi connect services with LTE plus speed on board, and a Wi-Fi hotspot integrates the passengers’ mobile devices. Audi connect emergency call and connect remote control are new standard additions.
The new Audi SQ2 is confirmed for the Australian market and is expected to arrive in mid-2021. Further information on pricing and specification details will be announced closer to launch.

The SQ5 is even sharper, sportier, and more efficient, with the optimised Audi SQ5 TDI now looking even more impressive. Its V6 3.0-litre diesel engine, with an output of 251kW and 700Nm, delivers its power smoothly and forcefully.
The 3.0-litre TDI develops its power earlier and more forcefully than before. It accelerates the top model of the Q5 product line from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
An actuator in the exhaust system, as fitted to the first SQ5 TDI, gives the V6 a sonorous sound. Two new technologies that reduce consumption and improve the engine response have also been added, including a 48-volt mild hybrid system (MHEV).
Integrating a belt alternator starter (BAS), a lithium-ion battery that provides buffer storage, and a 48/12-volt voltage converter, the system recovers up to 8kW of power during deceleration.
The second technology component is the electric powered compressor (EPC), which helps out whenever the exhaust gas flow provides too little energy to drive the turbocharger.
A compact electric motor, which also uses the compact 48-volt system, accelerates the compressor wheel of the EPC to 65,000rpm in roughly 300 milliseconds. The EPC is now used more frequently and across a broader engine map.
It supports a more spontaneous engine response when the vehicle moves off, as well as when accelerating from low engine speeds.
The optimised interaction between the components EPC, MHEV, turbocharger, the engine itself, and the tiptronic transmission supports this effect.
Power is transmitted by an eight-speed tiptronic featuring fast and convenient shifting and a gearshift strategy that has been adapted to suit the modified engine.
When the SQ5 TDI is in coasting mode with the engine switched off, a clutch in the central transmission opens and interrupts the power flow.
The modified Audi SQ5 TDI has a powerful stance, with striking details that give it an even more rugged appearance. Vertical fins provide structure to the large side air inlets on the front bumpers.
In the octagonal Singleframe grille that is specific to the S models, large octagonal honeycomb sections are linked by narrow bars. These have an aluminium finish, as do the fins on the air inlets.
Audi includes LED headlights as standard and offers Matrix LED headlights with automatic high beam and dynamic turn signals as an option. At the rear, a matte aluminium strip is integrated in the lower bumpers, above four chromium-plated oval tailpipe trims.
Customers have a choice of nine exterior paint finishes. The black styling package, which adds sporty accents, is available on request. Audi also offers the new digital OLED technology as an option for the rear lights of the top Q5 model.
The OLED rear light is split into three tiles of six segments each. When ordering their vehicle, customers can choose from three rear-light signatures, each with its own specific designs for coming and leaving home.
The SQ5 TDI features a black or dark grey interior with illuminated aluminium door sill trims bearing S logos. The electrically adjustable sport seats, featuring embossed S logos, are available in a choice of three upholstery variants.
A leather/synthetic leather combination is offered as standard, while a material mix of leather and Dinamica with S embossing is available as an option. The new Dinamica microfiber material consists mainly of recycled plastic and replaces Alcantara.
Another optional variant is fine Nappa leather with a rhombus pattern in magma red. The seats and steering wheel are decorated with contrasting stitching.
A massage function with three programs and seat ventilation are available on request. The inlays are brushed aluminium as standard. Available alternatives include two carbon versions as well as a piano finish.
The 10.1-inch MMI touch display serves as a combined input and display device in the centre of the instrument panel. A natural language voice control system and the multifunction steering wheel are available as additional control levels.
The 12.3-inch instrument display provides three different graphic layouts, Dynamic, Sport and Classic. Audi offers a head-up display as a further option. The system is compatable with the myAudi app and included Audi phone box smartphone platform.
The optional Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system provides an extraordinary sound experience. The hybrid radio, which switches automatically between FM, DAB and online streams to find the best reception, delivers a seamless experience.
The new Audi SQ5 TDI is expected to arrive in Australia in the second quarter of 2021, with further information on pricing and specification details to be announced closer to launch.
