Both the 2022 Kia K5 and the 2022 Nissan Altima have a choice of engines as well as optional all-wheel drive, a relative rarity among midsize sedans. Here’s how they compare.
2022 Kia K5
2022 Kia K5 Starting Price: $23,690 | Price yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Handsome looks; good fuel economy; sharp interior.
Below Average: GT model is front-wheel drive only; sunroof cuts into rear-seat headroom.
Consensus: A sporty midsize sedan with a fastback look, the 2022 Kia K5 offers technology, comfort, and great driving manners in a handsome package. A 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder returns good fuel economy, while the sporty GT model gets a potent 2.5-liter turbo.
2022 Nissan Altima
2022 Nissan Altima Starting Price: $24,500 | Price yours or View listings near you
Above Average: Great seats; sporty SR model; optional all-wheel drive.
Below Average: AWD not available with turbo engine; some safety features and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto not available on the base trim.
Consensus: With great seats, a couple of engine choices, and good safety features, the 2022 Nissan Altima is a reasonably priced contender in the midsize sedan segment. The rear seats are a little tight, and the base engine and CVT combination can drone a bit when pushed hard.
K5 vs. Altima: Comfort, Style, and Available AWD
Kia K5
Brand-new last year as a replacement for the Optima, the K5 remains a strong competitor in the midsize sedan segment. The base engine is a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which may seem small, but it provides plenty of low-end torque to keep the K5 moving. The 8-speed transmission helps it earn good fuel economy, while an optional Sport mode adds driving fun.
A higher trim called the GT-Line adds some sporty looks and 18-inch wheels, while the top GT trim brings a 2.5-liter turbo making 290 horsepower, sent through a dual-clutch 8-speed automatic. It’s worth noting, however, that the GT trim is front-wheel drive only.
We love the sharp looks of the outside, particularly the headlights and the fastback styling. The interior is a very nice place to be, with seats that are both comfortable and supportive, and a futuristic-looking instrument panel and infotainment system.
The rear legroom is a bit tight, however. Most interior functions are accessed via the infotainment screen or redundant buttons on the steering wheel, making the cabin neat and tidy.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is automatic emergency braking, although we wish the blind-spot warning was standard in all trims, particularly given the K5’s large C-pillar. Other standard safety features include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. Upper trims offer optional all-wheel drive, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, more USB ports, and larger wheels.
Nissan Altima
Without fail, one thing we always praise about the Nissan Altima is its seats. They are supportive, comfortable, and perhaps the best in any mainstream midsize sedan, perfect for hours behind the wheel.
Power in the 2022 Altima comes from a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, connected via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the front wheels or optionally, all four, which is somewhat of a rarity in its segment. In normal driving, the CVT is perfectly pleasant, but when pushed it can drone, sounding almost unsure of itself.
The real star, however, is a brilliant and silky 2.0-liter turbo in the 2.0 SR. The sporty variant, the SR has paddle shifters, a sport suspension, and a leather-covered steering wheel, but it can’t be optioned with all-wheel drive.
We like the fresh look of the exterior, and the interior of the 2022 Altima is simple and functional without being flashy. Controls are basic, and while the base S trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, SV and above trims get an 8-inch screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. Seating is good for four, although rear legroom is a bit tight compared to some of the competition. The trunk offers a usable 15.4 cubic feet of space.
Available on the SV trim and above is Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite, which includes lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-centering technology. Upper trims get such things as leather seats, a navigation system, a Bose audio system, and ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s semi-autonomous driving feature.
Similarities
Optional all-wheel drive, except on top sport model; choice of engines; fuel economy; trunk space.
2022 Kia K5 Advantages
More powerful upgrade engine; better standard features; long warranty.
2022 Nissan Altima Advantages
Great seats; lower starting price; slightly better fuel economy.
Which One is Right for Me?
The 2022 Kia K5 continues to improve on the midsize sedan formula. There’s a sporty GT model, good standard features, and a class-leading warranty.
The upper trims of the 2022 Nissan Altima offer a lot for the money, with optional all-wheel drive, respectable fuel economy, and some of the most comfortable seats in the business.
