G70 vs. 4 Series Gran Coupe: Sport Sedan Showdown
Genesis G70
In its quest to challenge the established German competition, Genesis continues to refresh the G70, with the sport model getting a new grille and revised headlights and taillights. The choice of engines continues, as well as standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. Base power comes from a 252-hp 2.0-liter turbo, with the 3.3T getting a 365-hp 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. The 8-speed automatic remains, although the optional manual has been dropped. Steering is sharp and the suspension is well-tuned for sporty driving.
Upgrades continue inside for 2022, with a new 10.25-inch screen that includes standard navigation, complemented by an 8-inch digital gauge cluster. The interior is luxurious and tasteful, with comfortable and supportive seats and a driver seat with standard 12-way power adjustments. Materials are high quality, with leatherette in the base model and Nappa leather in the higher trims.
Active safety features in the 2022 G70 include forward-collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control, as well as a new semi-autonomous driving system called Highway Driving Assist. Loads of options include a superlative 15-speaker/660-watt Lexicon audio system.
While Genesis does not yet have the name recognition of its German and Japanese competitors, its star is rising quickly. Resale values are expected to be strong, similar to those for Lexus.
BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
Unlike the 4-door 3 Series sedan, the 2022 BMW 4 Series is available as a coupe, convertible, or also a Gran Coupe (which is a 4-door with coupe-like styling). For the purposes of this comparison, we will be focusing on the Gran Coupe.
First and foremost, BMWs are never cheap. The Gran Coupe is the least expensive 4 Series, starting in the mid-$40,000 range, with top variants approaching $60K. Options can add many thousands to the price. No M version of the Gran Coupe is available… yet.
The base engine is a turbocharged 4-cylinder that makes ample power, and the Gran Coupe offers a comfortable and smooth ride. An 8-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels or optionally, all four. Hunched lower than the 3 Series, the 4 has more stability in the corners, and steering is both accurate and precise.
Unlike in the coupe and convertible 4 Series, the Gran Coupe has decent legroom in the rear, and the hatchback makes for flexible storage. Material quality is high and the build quality is excellent, with simulated leather upholstery coming standard; the real stuff is available as an option. Other standard features include power front sport seats, dual-zone climate control, and moonroof. Infotainment is provided by an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto with navigation, satellite radio, voice control, two USB ports, and 10-speaker/205-watt audio system.
Similarities
Optional all-wheel drive; choice of engines; base power; spirited handling.
2022 Genesis G70 Advantages
Much less expensive; long warranty; sportier looks.
2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Advantages
More powerful top engines; brand reputation; fuel economy; larger trunk.
Which One is Right for Me?
Starting under $40,000, the 2022 Genesis G70 offers a lot. It has a sporty look, a choice of strong engines, and excellent driving manners. A high-quality interior, a load of standard features, and a class-leading powertrain warranty make this one tough to beat.
A bit of an outlier, the 2022 BMW Gran Coupe is a 4-door coupe that seems to almost compete with the 3 Series sedan, as it is based on the same body. That said, it has a choice of engines, good handling, and luxury appointments throughout.
