Good Things Come In Small Packages: 10 Sporty Cars That Only Have 3 Cylinders - HotCars

Whoever said that you need lots of cylinders and tons of horsepower to have fun behind the wheel was terribly wrong. Over the years, many hot hatches have proved that you can have fun with 4 cylinders instead of 8 by adding one little thing: a turbocharger.

But what happens when fuel efficiency or restrictions become a problem? Or when 250 hp is too much for city usage? Well, manufacturers have found a way to build cars that get great mileage, are cheap and yet sporty and fun to drive.

When it comes to cool modern sports cars, these 3-cylinders are often overlooked or underrated, but they shouldn't be!

10 Daihatsu Charade GTti

The Charade GTti's looks definitely hide what's under the hood: a 3 cylinder 1.0 turbocharged engine with 101 hp. It doesn't sound amazing, but considering it weighs under 2000 lbs, it's not a bad number. Daihatsu took the most innocent car they had, turbocharged it, and turned it into a really fun little sports car.

9 Daihatsu Copen

The second-gen Daihatsu Copen might not be the prettiest car on the road nor very similar to its predecessor aesthetically, but it does carry the Kei-car heritage with pride. It has a 3-cylinder turbocharged 660cc engine that produces 64 hp. You can have it with a classic 5-speed manual or a 7 speed CVT.

8 Ford Fiesta ST-Line

Hot hatches are not as usual as they use to be, but with the new Fiesta ST-Line, Ford might start to revert the situation. The ST's little brother has a 1.o EcoBoost engine that produces 140 hp. Ford seems to be the only manufacturer doing everything right in this segment, the Fiesta ST-Line comes as a 5 door or a 3 door, and there is only one transmission available: a six-speed manual.

7 Honda Beat

Sports cars and supercars are not the only ones with mid engines and RWD. Kei-cars also share the layout. The Honda Beat was produced from 1991 to 1996 and was the last car approved by Soichiro Honda. As any other Honda from the 90s the Beat naturally aspirated, only this time the engine was 656cc. The only available transmission was a 5-speed manual.

6 Koenigsegg Gemera

When the Regera was shown to the world early this year, most people were not amazed by the 1700 hp, the seating layout, or the modern design. Of those 1700 hp, 600 come from a Bi-Turbo 2-liter 3-cylinder engine called Tiny Friendly Giant or TFG. It's capable of doing 250 mph and does 0 to 60 in only 1.9 seconds.

Gull-wing doors, a mid-mounted-engine, and rear-wheel drive sound like the key to success, right? Well, sadly it didn't work out for Mazda back in the '90s. The Autozam AZ-1 was Mazda's attempt to enter the Kei-car segment. It had a turbocharged 657cc engine that produced 64hp paired to a 5-speed manual, and it weighed only 1587 lbs - pure emotion on four wheels.

Sadly, it was also the most expensive on the segment and got negative press from the automotive world, the reason why only 4392 were ever made, making it a rare Kei-car.

4 Mini Cooper

Rated at 134 hp, the base model of the Mini Cooper is a small and fun car to drive. The BMW B38 engine is a 1.5l turbocharged straight three that produces more than enough power to move this little car around. As any respectable hot hatch, it comes with a six-speed manual transmission.

3 Suzuki Cappuccino

The Cappuccino is another member of the Kei-car family from the '90s. It has a 3 cylinder 659cc turbocharged engine making 63 hp. The RWD and the 5-speed manual combined with a weight of only 1500 lbs make this car extremely fun to drive. Another advantage of a Kei-car is fuel efficiency.

When the BMW i8 was introduced in 2014, it looked like a car from the future, and while the design hasn't changed a bit in six years, it still does. The i8 is a hybrid car that produces around 370 hp, and most of it comes from a 1.5 liter turbocharged 3 cylinder engine. It can do 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.

1 Volkswagen Pepper Up!

Very popular in Europe and South America, the smallest car produced by Volkswagen has been a hit since its release in 2014. The Volkswagen Up! is a city car with a 1-liter 75-hp engine. But in 2017 VW decided to put some TSI technology in it, so they turbocharged it an called it the Pepper Up! This version still has the 1 liter 3 cylinder engine, but now with 101 hp. Its fun to drive, it's cheap and gets great gas mileage.
