What better day than Presidents' Day to add a new entry to the annals of American style? I mean, sure, the new Wallabees dropping today courtesy of the team-up between Clarks Originals and Emily Oberg's label Sporty & Rich are made by a British brand in collaboration with a woman who grew up in Canada. And, yes, the style itself is actually based on a German-designed moccasin. But it is Presidents' Day, and personally, I'd rather spend my time looking at these shoes than another damn picture of Mount Rushmore, so guess what: Today, Wallabees are officially as American as apple pie.
These new ones—available in pale blue, deep red, and tan—are something the discerning long-weekend shopper can feel pretty good about, too. Sustainability was at the heart of the discussions between Oberg and Clarks, and the co-branded Wallabees reflect that. They're made with leather from a tannery that's got a robust carbon offset program (good, if not great) and use a FSC-certified natural crepe sole that's both renewable and harvested responsibly with a stamp of approval from the Forest Stewardship Council (actually, yeah, pretty great).
Oberg came up at Complex and Kith, so you might expect her to look to the sneaker space for her first footwear collab. Instead, she zagged—just a little. "I think that the Wallabee has always been a staple shoe in the closets of those with an adoration for sneakers," Oberg says. "If you know what's up, you were always into Wallabees!" The silhouette is also an easy fit for Sporty & Rich, which is less about high-performance athletics and more about the capturing the "off-duty celebrity popping out to the gym in the '90s" vibe.
"In my view there is no other shoe that has its combined level of aesthetic appeal and cultural significance," says James Frapwell, Clarks Originals' global head of marketing. The brand has made a point, over the last couple of years, of telling the style's story, hoping to convince shoppers "to see the shoe for what it is, a timeless icon and the natural alternative to sneakers." This latest drop should help do just that.
