It's been just two years since the Honda Civic Hatchback was given a mid-cycle makeover. Now, it's gotten a complete redesign. The 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback debuted featuring a less polarizing body style and more high-tech infotainment and safety features than the outgoing model.
The exterior of the 2022 Civic Hatchback is very similar to the new Civic Sedan, at least up front. Further back, it gets a traditional five-door body style that has been improved from the outgoing model and now includes a cargo door opening that is 1.6 inches wider. Side windows are wider and there's a new small corner window in the C-pillar to increase rearward visibility. Honda will offer the new model in two new colors: Boost Blue Pearl and Smoky Mauve Pearl.
For the first time in Civic Hatchback history, buyers will be able to choose between two available engine options. Civic Hatchback LX and Sport have a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood that produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. The Civic Hatchback EX-L and Sport Touring come with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque.
Sport and Sport Touring grades are available with a new six-speed manual transmission that is designed to deliver improved shift rigidity and have shorter throws. Other models have their engine paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Sport and Eco driving modes can be chosen via a toggle switch on the center console.
Designers have equipped the hatchback with the same modern interior as the sedan - a design that is new for Honda and will inform future cockpits. It comes standard with a 7-inch infotainment touch screen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers can upgrade to a 9-inch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system and wireless charging pad.
Honda has taken great effort to improve the seating in the new small car. Across all the model's trim levels, the car has the company's new Body Stabilizing Seat installed, which is designed to enhance comfort during long drives. The new Civic Hatchback has 1.4 inches of additional legroom than the outgoing model and headroom has been preserved. The rear seat features a 60/40 split. Civic Hatchback EX-L is available with perforated leather seats and added shoulder support is an option in Civic Hatchback Sport Touring models.
A side-pull cargo cover is able to conceal items stored in the rear area.
Honda Sensing, a suite of safety technology, is standard on every Civic. Like the Civic Sedan, the Civic Hatchback is equipped with Honda's new airbags, which are designed to reduce the likelihood of injuries from severe brain trauma associated with angled frontal collisions.
The Civic Hatchback will be made in America, with assembly happening at Honda's Indiana auto plant.
Model pricing and an on-sale date will be made public closer to the vehicle's launch later this year.
