2022 BMW 2-Series Active Tourer Leaked Showing Sporty MPV Looks And A Large Grille - CarScoops

The all-new second-generation BMW 2-Series Active Tourer has leaked on Instagram ahead of its debut, showing evolutionary styling that incorporates the latest design language of the Bavarian automaker, including a significantly larger kidney grille.

The MPV has been spied several times in the past couple of years, so we were familiar with the silhouette and a few of the design details hiding under the camouflage. Now, thanks to the leaked image that looks like it comes from an official ad, we have the full picture.

The 2-Series Active Tourer retains similar proportions to its predecessor but the overall shape looks more compact and sporty despite being a rather tall-bodied MPV. The leaked variant is the 223i with what appears to be the M Sport visual package.

The short bonnet is better integrated with the rest of the body, featuring slimmer headlights, an enlarged grille reaching lower to the front bumper, and taller side intakes with vertical chrome decorative elements. The profile seems to be better resolved with more pronounced shoulders and cleaner surfacing.

We don’t have pictures of the rear end but from the spy photographs, we know it will have horizontally mounted LED taillights and a more raked rear windscreen with an integrated spoiler. An earlier sneak peek inside suggests that the dashboard will incorporate a curved panel for the digital cockpit similar to that in the fully electric iX. We already know that the longer Grand Tourer variant will be dropped from the range, so the regular Active Tourer is expected to grow in size.

The new BMW 2-Series Active Tourer will be based on an upgraded version of the UKL platform that will be shared with the upcoming X1 and X2, offered in both FWD and AWD (xDrive) variants. In terms of powertrains, we expect a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel, alongside a plug-in hybrid with more power and greater range.

Since the advertising material seems to be ready, the official debut of the German MPV is expected sometime in the coming weeks, with production rumored to start in November 2021. As a reminder, the first generation first appeared in 2014 and received a facelift in 2018, concluding a seven-year production run in 2021. The sole competitor in the premium MPV market remains the Mercedes-Benz B-Class.
