Consensus: The sloped-roof alternate to its QX50 brother, the 2022 Infiniti QX55 offers handsome looks and a choice of drive modes. There’s only a single engine and transmission choice, and that roof design slightly impenges cargo room.
RDX vs. QX55: Compact Luxury with Style
Acura RDX
Among premium compact crossovers, we’re consistently impressed by the Acura RDX. Build quality is exceptional, it’s very reliable, and the cabin is a very nice place to be. There’s a single engine choice in the 2022 Acura RDX, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, but it provides plenty of thrust to keep this compact crossover moving.
The RDX is fun to drive as well, particularly when equipped with the Advance package, which comes with an adaptive suspension and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The brake pedal feel is good, much improved over last year.
While not exactly radical, the interior of the RDX is comforting and quiet, with more noise reduction features this year. There’s plenty of space for passengers front and rear, and the 38 inches of rear legroom is among the best in the class. There are tasteful and elegant bits of aluminum on the doors, dashboard, and center console, with the upper trims getting wood. Cargo space is also generous, with nearly 60 cubic feet.
A long list of standard features includes keyless entry and ignition, a powered tilt and slide panoramic roof, simulated leather upholstery, heated and 12-way power-adjustable front seats, and dual-zone climate control. Infotainment comes from a 10.2-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, plus Wi-Fi, and both USB-A and USB-C ports. Driver assistance features include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.
Infiniti QX55
Brand-new this year, the 2022 Infiniti QX55 is the latest in a trend toward crossover SUVs with “coupe-like” styling. The sloped roof gives it a slick, sporty appearance, and fortunately doesn’t impede on headroom too much, but makes a slight dent in cargo space compared to the QX50. There’s also a thick rear pillar that makes for a big blind spot.
There’s only one choice of engine in the QX55, a turbocharged 4-cylinder, but its 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque hustle the little SUV around. All QX55s are all-wheel drive and use a continuously variable transmission (CVT). There are a few different drive modes, and Sport mode actually makes this little crossover feel sporty, with a tightened suspension and more responsive steering. The all-wheel-drive system provides plenty of grip and the brakes are strong.
The interior provides good space for five passengers, and the second-row bench slides in order to maximize legroom. Heated front seats are standard, as well as leatherette upholstery, with upper trims getting genuine leather and open-pore maple trim. Despite the sound deadening, however, we found that the cabin can get rather loud.
Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay (Android Auto requires a cable), dual touchscreens, a power moonroof, and dual-zone climate control. Upper trims get such things as adaptive cruise control, a navigation system, and an exceptional 16-speaker Bose audio system.
