2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs. 2022 Chevrolet Blazer Comparison - Kelley Blue Book

While both the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse and 2022 Chevrolet Blazer are midsize SUVs, the larger Traverse has three rows of seats to the Blazer’s two. Here’s how they compare.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

Above Average: Up to 8-passenger capacity; good standard safety features; cargo capacity.

Below Average: Single engine choice; no hybrid option; adaptive cruise control costs extra; expensive for higher trim levels.

Consensus: One of the larger members of the midsize SUV class, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offers ample room for seven or eight passengers depending on seating configuration, as well as great cargo space. There’s only one engine choice, and features like adaptive cruise control are extra-cost options.

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

Above Average: Sharp looks; strong optional V6; good handling for an SUV.

Below Average: Tight rear seat; lacks some standard safety features; not really intended for off-roading.

Consensus: With looks reminiscent of the Camaro, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer has a sporty vibe and a choice of engines. Rear seat space is a bit tight, as is cargo, and despite the optional all-wheel drive, its focus is on-road handling vs. off-road capability.

Traverse vs. Blazer: Practical vs. Sporty

Chevrolet Traverse

While still classified as a midsize, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is one of the largest members of its class. This translates into plenty of room for seven or eight passengers, as well as nearly 100 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.

A 3.6-liter V6 makes over 300 horsepower, which gives the Traverse ample grunt to get around. Front-wheel drive is the base layout, while all-wheel drive is available for about $2,000 more (depending on trim). With a towing package, the Traverse can pull 5,000 pounds. We wouldn’t say the Traverse is particularly exciting to drive, but most people don’t buy a 3-row family SUV to take it to the track.

Optional second-row captain’s chairs reduce passenger capacity to seven instead of the eight with a second-row bench. The interior isn’t exactly fresh and exciting, but it’s comfortable and there are dials and buttons to control climate control and audio, rather than the tendency toward touchscreens for everything. Standard features include USB ports in all three rows and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also included is a full suite of safety features as well as GM’s OnStar service.

Upper trims add such things as leather upholstery, an upgraded audio system, hands-free power tailgate, and larger wheels. Adaptive cruise control is also available, but only on the higher trims.

Chevrolet Blazer

Muscular and handsome, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer has a distinctly sporty look, backed up by a choice of engines and impressive handling for a midsize SUV.

With Chevy having dropped the previous base engine for 2022, the choices are now a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder or a 308-horsepower 3.6-liter V6. A 9-speed automatic sends power to either the front wheels or all four. Most people will likely be satisfied with the base engine, but the V6 goes well with the sporty vibe. Handling is sharp and the brakes are confident.

We like the chiseled looks of the Blazer, and the interior has a straightforward, sporty vibe to it as well, with a standard 8-inch touchscreen controlling infotainment. Rear-seat space is a bit tight for adults, although with all seats folded, there are 64.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the proper package, the Blazer can tow up to 4,500 pounds.

Base features include the 8-inch screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus Amazon Alexa and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Also included are dual-zone climate control and the Chevy Safety Assist package that bundles automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, and forward-collision alert.

Past the base trim, there is the RS for a more sporty feel, the V6 engine, a more sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, and some interesting wheel options and accents. More toward the luxury front is the Premier, with perforated leather-appointed seating.

Similarities

Starting price; optional all-wheel drive; warranty.

Which One is Right for Me?

If you have a large family, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is the way to go, with three rows of seats for seven or eight passengers and plenty of space for their luggage. It’s not a thrill ride, but it will get you and your family to your destination in comfort.

Quite the opposite is the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer. It’s also midsize but offers only two rows of seating. However, it’s more fun to drive than the Traverse, particularly with the V6, and still has decent cargo capacity.
