The Civic is arguably the most important model for Honda. Not because it’s the most fun you can have on a budget, but considering that it’s the affordable Swiss Army knife for about 50 years now. Now times are different. With crossovers and trucks dominating the market, there's less wiggle room for the sedan. Instead of cutting back though, Honda has pulled out an all-new design backed by a winning formula. The 2022 Civic has arrived.
Accord Styling, Compact Size
The Civic, now in its 11th generation, is a bit longer, wider, and taller, but small enough to remain a compact at 184 inches bumper-to-bumper. It ditches the wild style of the last model that debuted to mixed reactions in favor of a more conventional design mimicking its big brother Accord. This is no accident since the 2022 Civic adopts styling cues from the Accord. A low, long hood for a leaner stance, fastback roofline towards the rear and the array of wide-set LEDs that now come standard.
Under the hood is less evolutionary. A 2-liter inline-four remains the base engine, while the 1.5-liter turbo-four is standard on EX trims and up. A CVT transmission is coupled to both engines. Fuel economy improves all around, capable of reaching up to an EPA-certified 42 MPG on the highway.
Interior Is Star Of The Show
When the Civic Prototype premiered in late 2020, there was no mention of an interior. All we had to go on were sketchy sketches that highlighted certain details and omitted others. Now revealed in full glory, we can see why Honda held back. It presents a revolutionary step forward.
Ditching the cocoon-like setup of the last one, the new Civic adopts an open atmosphere working in conjunction with the low hood. It's a mixed mashup of high quality materials, cutting edge technology and funky features to appreciate in between. One detail leaving a lasting impression are the air vents cleverly hidden in the honeycomb mesh grate that stretches across the dashboard.
Honda hasn't adopted a widescreen setup for its latest infotainment system. A 7-inch screen is standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to boot, backed by the return of physical buttons. A 9-inch setup is standard on the Touring model as is the Bose sound system. Similarly, a 7-inch screen occupies the gauge cluster in front of the driver, jumping up to 10.2 on the top-end variant.
When's The Type-R Coming?
If we follow the production cycle of the old Civic, it'll be released around the time Honda releases the hatchback variant, with the hot hatch on its heels. Riding on the success of the last Type-R, Honda has big shoes to fill if they want to improve on what's been billed the greatest handling front-drive car of all time. This is not a new challenge for Honda though, as the 2022 Civic marks 50 years of improvements. In the meantime, expect the sedan to arrive in showrooms by late summer 2021.
