Kim Jones is closing in on his third year as men’s artistic director at Dior, and while the lead visionary’s design repertoire is known to call on modern art collaborators — be it KAWS, Daniel Arsham, Amoako Boafo, Kenny Scharf or Peter Doig of seasons past — Jones has taken a different approach to Resort 2022. Flipping back through the archives, the designer has sought sartorial inspiration from the 1960s style archetypes of Marc Bohan — the renowned creative who helmed the label for 30 years.
Jones modifies Bohan’s well-known Dior Oblique pattern in subtle forms across the collection, while the former Dior designer’s heart-shaped “CD” lands on jackets and shirts in custom embroidery. Additionally, vintage “Christian Dior Atelier” iconography elevates button-up varsity jackets and baseball shirts.
“Obviously, the customer will recognize and be comfortable in the Dior shapes, but we wanted to play with proportions a bit and look at a way of making tailoring feel less formal, but still really relevant,” Jones said in a statement to WWD.
Wide-set pants complement boxy suit jackets, while nylon windbreakers that convert into saddle bags and a selection of jackets in cheetah print and shearling are likely to have mass appeal. Casual-yet-sharp tailoring underscores the entire range, while a sophisticated color wheel of chocolate brown, forest green, light pink and deep navy speaks to Jones’ almost-three-year legacy at the label.
“The color palette was really a compilation of all our favorite colors we used over the last three years — mixing that together and bringing it forward so that we could then move into the next step of what we do at Dior. I think it’s good to reinvent what you do,” he added.
With Dior’s growing footwear category, Jones welcomed the B30 sneaker, which plays into French modernist codes with an oversized “CD” logo embossment and an aerodynamic construction. As for accessories, the collection welcomes the new Lingot bag, which boasts a rectangular shape in a range of sizes.
Elsewhere, rumors are circulating among the sneaker community regarding new colorways for the Dior x Air Jordan 1s. Though the new shoes have not yet been confirmed by either brand, take a look at the House of Heat’s mock-ups of what the new designs might look like.
