Nissan has made a big change to their venerable Sentra compact sedan. Where prior generations had grown a little bland, the all-new 2020 Sentra is bold, with a sporty look that recalls the brand's GT-R halo sports car. The new Sentra features pronounced fenders, a floating black roof that makes the car look lower and more aggressive, and larger wheels for a compelling stance.
"It's putting the Sentra in line with the rest of Nissan products," said Marcus Quach, the lead designer for the Sentra. "Altima and Maxima are moving more toward the sporty, athletic directions. The car is lower and wider, and the wheel-to-body ratio gives the car a nice foundation and a good stance on the road."
The new design makes the 2020 Sentra a whole new car — one that can compete with the Europeans in terms of design and appeal, and win on price. The 2020 Sentra comes in three trims, with MSRP starting under $20,000 for the base Sentra S. The upgrade SV and SR trims start just over $20,000. A premium package is available for each of those trims for about $2,000, and includes features like LED headlights, heated seats and steering wheel, surround-view camera system, and a Bose audio system.
The mechanical underpinnings of the Sentra include a 149-horsepower 2.0-liter engine with a continuously variable transmission. Nissan has put a lot of work into their CVT, with the result that it feels like any other automatic transmission. All Sentra trims come with four-wheel disc brakes and a multi-link rear suspension. Best of all, this Sentra returns 37 MPG on the highway, making it a great commuter choice.
The Sentra is sporty, but it's also safe. Standard safety features on all trim levels include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, blind spot and rear cross-traffic alerts, and lane departure warning with a haptic vibration in the steering wheel. There's one more safety feature to mention, and that's rear automatic braking. Parking lots keep getting tighter, and even with a standard backup camera, it's easy to back into things. Automatic braking in reverse simply takes care of that, and it's standard on Sentra.
On the road, you'll find that the 2020 Sentra lives up to its promise. There's good power under your foot, and the sedan is quiet and smooth. This is a car you'll enjoy driving, and there's room for five adults.
If you go big with the top SR trim and you include the Premium Package, two-tone paint, and the extra ambient lighting option, your price including all fees comes to $25,480. That's an affordable way to get to the top of the line with the features you'll really enjoy in a daily driver.
