Looking for something sporty for your kids to do? Summer may have already begun, but several local coaches and organizations have planned sport-specific camps to keep kids playing and busy during the next couple of months.
The Police Athletic League has launched the Bobby Hurt’s Basketball 101 Skills Camp for the summer. Taking place daily at Glenfield Park, the camp began on June 28 and will run until Aug. 16. Each day begins at 9 a.m. and finishes up at 3 p.m. The program is aimed at children grades four through eight, and kids are asked to bring a bag lunch, a water bottle or sports drink and, if possible, a basketball.
Hurt, who was a Montclair High School JV basketball coach and a varsity assistant coach for 19 years as well as an operational aide in the Montclair school district for 20 years , died in 2014 at the age of 51. He began the Basketball 101 program in 2005 and was its chief executive officer. In 2015, the basketball courts at Glenfield Park were rechristened the Robert Hurt Basketball Courts.
There is a cash-only concession stand available daily at the camp.
The cost of an individual week at the camp is $155.
Registration is online at MontclairPAL.Leagueapps.com. Questions can be sent to the camp’s director, coach Cecil Stinson, at cecilstinson@gmail.com.
The Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs department has a basketball camp as well as other sports for your kids to take part in.
There’s a co-ed basketball camp for kids aged 8 to 14 years old which runs from July 12 to Aug 6 Monday through Friday from 9am to noon. Cost per week is $75.
They also have a baseball camp for kids aged 8 to 12 which began on June 28 but will run until July 23 at Mountainside Park. As with the basketball camp, the camp runs Monday through Friday from 9am to noon and costs $75 a week. There is also a general “Summer Fun” camp which started June 28, and will run until Aug 6. That camp focuses on multiple games and team building exercises as well as arts and crafts and is broken into two daily sessions, the first from 9am to noon and the second from 1pm to 4pm. For one session per day, the cost is $75 but if you want to have both sessions, it is $150 a week and you have to pick your child up at noon and drop them off again at 1pm. This camp is held at Edgemont Park.
You can register for either camp at Register.CommunityPass.net/Montclair and if you have any questions you can call 973-509-4915..
If basketball isn’t your kid’s thing, field hockey is underway at Fortunato Field.
In a yearly tradition, Montclair High School field hockey coach Mary Pat Mercuro will be teaming up with Montclair Kimberley Academy head coach Injoo Han for the Strokeline Field Hockey summer camp.
Not only will the two high school head coaches work with the kids, but varsity players from MHS and MKA and collegiate players will be at sessions as well.
The first session is underway and wraps up on Friday, July 2. There is a second session from July 6 to July 9. The camp is for kids from kindergarten to ninth grade, and the session costs $200.
Kids need a field hockey stick, shinguards, a mouth guard and sneakers, turf shoes or cleats. Days start at 3 p.m. and run until 6 p.m. all four days of the session, which is open to advanced players, intermediates and beginners. Due to the construction at Watchung Park, practices are taking place on Fortunato Field in the Aubrey Lewis Sports Complex on Essex Avenue.

Varsity athletes will also see plenty of action this summer.
While still in its early stages, an outdoor summer league at Glenfield Park is being put together by MHS girls varsity basketball coach Ed Connell. Connell hopes to feature many Mounties as well as other premium talent from the area. Games are currently scheduled for 5, 6 and 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, but dates and times are not yet set in stone.
“We are excited to help bring summer ball back to Montclair,” Connell said.
