Sporty by name, essentially fuel efficient - Illinoisnewstoday.com

Toyota broke the mold with the C-HR SUV, its funky styling is a big shift from the brand’s usual conservative look, and its latest version wears its new GR Sport badge. We find out what it is.

worth

The Toyota C-HR occupies the space between the popular medium-sized RAV4 and the pint-sized Yaris Cross.

Buyers can choose from two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, and hybrid variations. Three trim levels are available: GXL, Koba and GR Sport.

Prices start at around $ 34,600 driveaway in the base GXL two-wheel drive petrol format and rise to around $ 41,600 for the GR Sport tested here.

GR stands for Toyota’s new performance sub-brand, Gazoo Racing, but this model is not a variation of performance, but a practice of styling.

Small SUVs cost a lot of money, but they bring a long list of standard equipment, including vibrant hybrid performance, sporty driving characters, large 19-inch alloy wheels and GR badges, both inside and outside.

The dash layout is functional, but without the awesome elements, the instrument cluster’s 4.2-inch info screen isn’t as modern as some rivals.

However, the 8-inch central touchscreen is a decent size and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in addition to Bluetooth and satellite positioning systems.

Toyota guarantees C-HR for 5 years / unlimited kilometers and service is very cheap at $ 1000 for 5 years

comfortable

Reinforced sports seats with leather accents hug the previous passengers tightly, but don’t provide the heating features found in the Koba variations for the same price.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter, along with the GR Sport pedals and door trim, make the cabin feel a little special.

The cabin is a bit cozy, but thanks to the sloping roofline and small, tall windows, especially the backseats, I feel a little claustrophobic.

Especially small children have a hard time looking out the window.

The lack of rear air vents and USB charging points is a shame.

The GR Sport has a more solid suspension than the other C-HR ranges, but it still manages the mocking city streets without any problems.

safety

Toyota covers all safety infrastructure. The GR Sport automatically brakes the car and pedestrians when it detects a possible collision and notifies the driver if the car is in a blind spot.

Rear crossing traffic warnings make it easy to retreat from driveways and tight parking lots and warn you if a car is coming.

If the C-HR detects that you are leaving the lane, it will keep you in the lane and gently pull the steering wheel back into the lane.

drive

The petrol and electricity combo doesn’t create a pile of power, but the momentary torque of the electric motor makes it feel like it’s off the line.

The compact SUV is not known for its driving ability, but the GR Sport hugs the corners like a hatch and feels both stability and agility thanks to its solid suspension. Sharp and direct steering adds to the fun.

The non-turbo engine has to spin high to reach its power reserve, so it can feel a bit struggling on steep hills.

The compact proportions and operability of the C-HR make it easy to move around narrow streets and parking lots.

The fuel consumption is claimed to be 4.3L / 100km, and it was managed in a state close to that, especially when driving in urban areas. Standard petrol engines require premium fuel, while hybrids require only regular fuel, which saves fuel.

VERDICT 3.5 / 5

The C-HR is driving and fuel efficient, but expensive and more suitable for couples than families.

Alternative proposal

Skoda Kamiku Monte Carlo from $ 36,990 drive away

Sporty looks, punchy turbo engine, cracking drive. The dual clutch auto is a little sticky at low speeds.

Mazda CX-30 G20 Touring FWD, from drive away for about $ 39,500

High quality cabin, eye-catching exterior design, and fun to drive. However, the engine lacks some improvements.

Hyundai Kona N-Line, from about $ 40,200 by car

You can see the intense turbo engine and head turning, but I’m thirsty when compared.
