Hyundai Sonata
Now in its eighth generation, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata continues to impress, even adding a sporty new N Line to a stable that also includes a 53 mpg hybrid. A good value, the base Sonata is very well equipped with safety equipment and infotainment features, and its ride and handling provides an excellent mix of sport and comfort.
The upgrade 1.6-liter turbo makes a little less horsepower than the base 2.5-liter, but more torque, which helps with acceleration and passing. Unlike many hybrids, the Sonata hybrid drives like a regular car, with a rare 6-speed automatic transmission instead of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) typical of most hybrids.
The exterior look of the Sonata could be described as bold, and it’s not to everyone’s liking. But the interior is very comfortable, with impressive legroom in both front and back. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a full suite of active safety and driver-assist features.
New this year is the N Line performance model, which comes standard with a potent, 290-horsepower turbocharged engine, 19-inch wheels, sport seats, and a paddle-shift 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
One thing we particularly like about the 2021 Sonata is Highway Drive Assist, a semi-autonomous driving system that’s standard in the Limited trim and optional in the SEL Plus. The Sonata includes a class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well as free standard maintenance for the first 3 years of ownership.
Volvo S60
Handsome and stylish, the 2021 Volvo S60 is the Swedish automaker’s compact luxury sedan, offering ample safety features (a bit of a Volvo trademark) and respectable driving manners.
The base engine is a turbocharged 4-cylinder that sends power to the front wheels. An optional 4-cylinder that is both turbocharged and supercharged comes with all-wheel drive (AWD). That same engine is paired with an electric motor in the S60 hybrid (Recharge in Volvo’s parlance), which is also AWD.
Driving manners are refined and strike a good balance between comfort and performance, although its rear-drive German competitors feel more nimble and sporting.
Inside, the 2021 S60 offers plenty of space for passengers, even with the panoramic sunroof, and a clean, efficient cabin. One thing we’re not crazy about is the vertically oriented touchscreen. Controlling and using it is a bit of a learning curve.
Standard features are good, with even the base Momentum trim offering 10-way power front seats, dual-zone climate control, leatherette upholstery, and an infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, and a 10-speaker sound system.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is considerably less expensive, gets better fuel economy, and is extremely well equipped, with a class-leading warranty to boot. It offers plenty of high-tech features and a new sporty N Line model as well as a hybrid.
The 2021 Volvo S60 has a more sophisticated, worldly European feel. It’s more expensive, but it has a luxury feel, with a bit less plastic, standard leatherette, and a range of powertrains including an impressive plug-in hybrid that returns 69 MPGe.
