It’s been quite a year, 2020, in the world of Sammy Sportface. Its Baby Boomer Brotherhood has not really come together in any meaningful ways. The mission isn’t resonating. Membership is down.
With this in mind, we are hereby announcing the winners of the “Sporty Awards” for 2020.
In the category of least likely to comment on a Sportface blog out of fears of what it will cost them professionally, the winners are Tom Naves, Arnold Bradley Peters, and Larry Z.
“Sportface is right,” says Naves. “If I comment on any of his blogs, if I in any way reveal that I’m associated with him, my entire career that I’ve spent decades crafting and maneuvering could come crashing down in seconds.”
Said Peters: “It’s true. I can’t let anyone know I’m part of the Baby Boomer Brotherhood. It will shatter my professional reputation. Sportface ruins people.”
In the category of most likely to file a lawsuit if Sportface goes too far in his defamations of Georgetown Prep pansies, the Sporty goes to Lal Henne Heneghan.
“Sure I’ve thought of suing Sportface more than a few times this year,” says Henne. “I tell you what, the cat better watch out. One blog that goes too far and he’ll find himself as a defendant getting sued to smithereens. He thinks it cool to mess with Prep guys but the dingbat doesn’t seem to understand that two Prep guys sit on the bench of the United States Supreme Court.”
In the category of truly indifferent members of the Baby Boomer Brotherhood who regret ever signing up for the group, the Sporty awards go to John Hubbard and Al Furnari.
“My boy Pistol Pete told me to sign up for Sammy Sportface,” said Hubbard. “Ever since I’ve been bombarded daily with blogs about things I could care less about. I’ve lost faith in my boy Pistol Pete. His recommendation to join this group is the single biggest time-suck I have ever experienced.”
In the category of the most egomaniacal Brother who only read it if the blog is about them, the award goes to Carl Bruce Sonny Massey Junior Junior Massey Sonny Bruce Carl.
“I never read anything Sportface writes unless it’s a psychoanalysis of me and how it came to be that I’m smarter than everyone else in this Brotherhood and have a higher IQ than everyone I’ve ever known,” said Sonny. “I mean Sportface wrote something about me and phantasmagoria that had some high-minded intellectual merit but the rest of his stuff has been utter dreck.”
In the category of Brothers who get the most Sportface references while at the same time showing the most level of detachment and disinterest and lack of appreciation, the Sporty award goes to Frank Ryan.
“Sportface seems to think he and I are buddies but he’s badly mistaken,” said Ryan. “I’ve never been a Sportface guy and never will be. He wants me to be because I’m the funniest guy in his Brotherhood but I’m not falling into that trap. Sportface needs me, as we all know, but I don’t need him. I’m Chris Mullin.”
In the category of most total Sportface references in 2020, the winner goes to Rudyface.
“I hate Sportface,” said Rudyface. “The guy writes about me all the time, texts me, calls me, and I never answer because he’s a loser.”
In the category of most leery that he’ll write another blog focused on him, the award goes to Tom TR Reilly.
“I shudder to think what Sportface will say next about my feelings for Hottie,” said TR. “The last time he wrote about me and Hottie I had to do damage control in my family for months.”
In the category of most parochial in their interests in only wanting to read Harry High School stories, there was a tie this year between Wolfford and Head.
“All I want from Sportface are high school stories,” said Head. “He can write about how big my Head is every day and I’d read about it. Sportface needs to stick to his knitting and stay focused on our old glory days in high school when Gil was a psychopath and the size of my head was the most fascinating thing any of us ever knew.”
In the category of offering the fewest number of comments to Sportface while having the most thoughts he wants to share, the Sporty Award goes to Jimmy DMAC McCormack.
“Sportface is spot on,” says DMAC. “I’ve got plenty of things to say about Sportface but I don’t know how to tell Sportface what I really think.”
In the category of most engaged with Sportface content in 2020, there’s been a three-way tie between DJ, Rip, and Pistol Pete. All three have shown a disproportionately high level of interest in Sammy Sportface blogs this year and, most importantly, the ability to riff off Sportface’s ideas to come up with new ideas.
But there’s one caveat. DJ gets this award but he’s penalized for constantly bringing up his relationship with Jacklyn Smith and his intramural basketball championship at Wake Forest that nobody cares about.
“What Sportface doesn’t understand is that I’m working an angle to take over the Sammy Sportface brand and make it DJ Sportface,” he said.
Said Pistol: “I’ve told Sportface over and over that he needs to ditch the Harry High School stuff or this enterprise is doomed. But I’m honored to win this Sporty Award. It’s a real honor to be part of an unsuccessful project.”
Heading into next year, the Sammy Sportface Syndication Network has posted a job opening for Chief of Ideation. So far DJ and Pistol have applied.
“While I’m glad DJ and Pistol applied, I’m thinking we need Jimmy Cardaci, Qweenie, and Al Furnari to apply as well,” said Sportface. “Diversity of thought is a hallmark of the Sammy Sportface brand. We can’t pump out any more stale content or the Brotherhood will collapse.”
