You Can Buy These 10 Sporty Daily Drivers For Under $20,000 - HotCars

One of the most common questions people wonder about when looking for a car is, "What's the sportiest and most practical daily driver within my budget?" Some follow through on the sporty aspect and buy an actual sports car, while others feel it's too much of a compromise. Getting both aspects is difficult for those without full knowledge of the industry, but it definitely still is attainable.

There are many ways to determine what makes a good daily driver, but generally, sedans and hatchbacks are best in terms of accessibility.  There is also a significant following for most of the options available, which is excellent for enthusiasts seeking easy modifications for their car. Other options are a bit tamer for those that are content with the factory setup.

10 Subaru WRX

One of the most popular enthusiast sedans is the WRX. There are so many reasons why, as it has old-school driving dynamics that aren't found in most modern cars. It's not the best option for those seeking luxury or the newest technology, but it is quite spacious, handles well, has all-wheel drive, and looks aggressive.

The WRX's impressive all-wheel-drive system is probably the biggest gamechanger, as it can take on gravel roads and snow with ease.  It is best bought with manual transmission for the most fun, although a CVT transmission is available. It may be worth checking out the STI for those who have a bigger budget and existing interest in the WRX, as there are some differences between the two.

9 Hyundai Elantra GT Sport

Via Car & Driver

The Hyundai Elantra GT Sport is a very tame option and doesn't look like much from the outside. However, it's much better than it looks and has some sporty additions that would surprise many. The GT Sport trim has a surprisingly handsome interior, a unique powertrain, and modern amenities.

The GT Sport is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 201 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch and a six-speed manual transmission are available. Handling is surprisingly good, and many will have fun with its improved brakes and suspension setup. The interior is not what you would associate with a Hyundai, with a surprisingly good layout and attractive red accents. It's a great daily driver with surprising sportiness.

8 Ford Focus ST

Via Ford Media

The Focus ST is somewhat of a forgotten option, mainly because of its discontinuation. The ST maintains a good balance between the performance-oriented RS and the practicality found in the other trims of the Focus. While the RS is a great option, it's more performance than most need, and the cost is quite a bit higher.

The Focus ST's winning characteristics are the handling, six-speed manual transmission, and powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While it's no drag racer in stock form, it does have good pep for daily driving. It also has decent space despite its smaller size. It's certainly worth a look as a special hot hatchback.

7 Mazda6

Cars like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are common options in the mid-size economy segment for those who want a reliable and simple option. However, many forget that the Mazda 6 is a great alternative with great handling, good safety, and sophisticated styling.

Via AutoRevolution

One of the best options of the Mazda 6 is the six-speed manual transmission. It isn't easy to find, but it's well-suited to the handling and acceleration. The 2.5-liter engine is not fast, but it is energetic for this class. The interior looks classy, and the layout is simple. It's a great sedan with simple offerings and not too many demerits.

6 Ford Fusion Sport

Via Ford Media

The Ford Fusion Sport is a good example of a sleeper. Compared to the regular Fusion, there are a few changes like different wheels, grille, and exhaust tips. It looks very similar to a regular Fusion, but it has a potent powertrain under the hood.

Via Ford Media

It has a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that makes loads of power for this chassis, 325 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque to be exact. The all-wheel-drive platform helps to keep traction as well. Sadly, it's only available with a six-speed automatic transmission that isn't the quickest shifting. Remember, fuel economy isn't good for a six-cylinder with an average of 20 miles per gallon. It has some compromises, but it's a spacious and unique car with great power at this price-point.

5 Honda Civic Si

Via Honda News

With the Civic Type R becoming a hot car early on for its polarizing styling and impressive performance, the Si is largely overlooked. Most sporty options within this price range usually fall apart as they age, but the Civic has a solid reputation for reliability, assuming that it hasn't been abused. Not surprisingly, it's a favorite among tuners.

Via Honda News

The Civic Si is powered by a 205-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired to a six-speed manual transmission. While it's no speed demon, handling is quite decent. It also has great technology with options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Overall, it's a great package that balances practicality and performance very well.

4 Volkswagen GTI

The Volkswagen GTI is a major front-runner for those seeking a compact car that is an impressive performer. It's a competitor to the WRX, and they share many of the same benefits, but there are some important distinctions.

The GTI has an impressive powertrain. Power from the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine at 210 horsepower, but the handling is where the GTI really shines. The transmission performance from both the manual and dual-clutch transmission is perfect with the motor. Unlike most vehicles that have harsh ride quality, the adjustable suspension makes it quite versatile. Reliability is somewhat concerning, but for the mechanically inclined, it shouldn't be a problem.

3 Mini Cooper S

Via TheCarConnection

The Mini Cooper is certainly a unique option for those who see its allure. It's a unique vehicle with a lot of thrills. It does have drawbacks like its smaller size, stiff suspension, and questionable reliability. But most enthusiasts will enjoy the agility and class that the Mini Cooper offers.

The engine in the Cooper S is a 189 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It's a peppy option compared to the base option and can be easily found for under $20,000. A manual transmission is also available, although the automatic transmission is decent. The interior also looks very nice with good materials. Love it or hate it, the Mini Cooper S definitely has character.

2 Audi A4

Via PCMag

The Audi A4 is a much different option and offers a great package that's been well-known for years. It offers textbook luxury, sportiness,  all-wheel-drive, amazing technology, and the brand cachet that everyone desires. However, it has higher servicing costs and less-than-stellar reliability. Those that are comfortable working on their own vehicle or don't mind servicing will likely be pleased with the A4.

Via Grassroots Motorsports

Many would be happy with the A4's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Despite its luxurious roots, handling and steering are excellent. A manual transmission is also available with the all-wheel-drive Quattro system.

1 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Sport

Via Infiniti News

The Infiniti Q50 wasn't quite as formidable to take on the likes of German rivals when new. However, that makes it a fantastic bargain with a lot of bang for the buck now as a used option. The Q50 is a rear-biased sedan with lots of power, good handling, and very safe.

Via Infiniti News

The best engine for the Q50 is the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6, which makes 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. The athletic handling pairs well with the powertrain. However, the interior is as well as the infotainment is a little disappointing. But as an overall package, it's decent.
